How To Install Deb Files

Caution:  .DEB files are available from many sources on the web, but not

all are safe for installation on Klikit, in fact, some of them may trash your

system irreparably, forcing you to reinstall Klikit from scratch.  I would

highly recomend that you install only .DEBs compiled for, and tested on

your version of Klikit, or .DEBs which have been tested and recommended by

other Klikit users.  You have been warned!  The following listed download sites

and repositories have been created by fellow Klikers, and feature packages

known to be safe, and to work on the specific version of Klikit for which they

were compiled.

The GeekConnection provides the best known and most fully integrated repository of software

packaged especially for Klikit.  You can download individual package files from the Downloads

page, or add the repository to your sources list in Synaptic, then just search and select the

desired programs from the menus in Synaptic.

Now, on to the installation procedure:

    1.  Download your .DEB file to an easy to find location.  (I save all my downloaded DEBs

to a folder named "Linux Packages", on a separate partition, so that in the event I

need to reinstall Klikit, I won't have to download them again.)

    2.  Open Konqueror, (the file manager), and navigate to the folder where you saved your

         downloaded DEB file:

Locate the DEB file, and single-click on it.  The Package Installer will open.  Click the Install

Package button.  If prompted for a password, enter the password for your user account.

    3.  Wait while Package Installer installs the file.  When it says Done, close the installation window,

and you are finished.  Exit Package Installer, and go enjoy your new software.  papabearak

* Note:  Not all debs create their own menu entries and desktop icons, and in such cases, it will be necessary

to create your own.  For tips on how to do this, see:  How to use Menu Editor (Add or Remove Applications)
