Installing Software in Klikit
Installing Software in Klikit
Klikit-Linux comes with the most popular and most requested software packages already installed. Even so, everyone's needs are different, and you will almost certainly wish to install additional software to meet those needs. Fortunately, Klikit-Linux offers a selection of more than 20,000 packages, in the repositories, and also offers several simple, one-click methods to install them. This article will cover the process for installing software using Synaptic Package Manager. I use Picasa, from Google, in this example, and Picasa is unfortunately, no longer available in the Klikit repositories, but the installation steps are the same for virtually any package in the repositories. Start by opening Synaptic Package Manager: Launch > Daily Used > Add or Remove programs. When the Synaptic window opens, it will take a minute to update its package lists. Once it is ready, click the Search button on the toolbar. The Find requester will open. Type in the name of the software package you want in the Search field, and click Search.
Note: Picasa can be installed in Klikit directly from Google, by downloading the .DEB file, and installing it by the alternate installation procedure outlined in this Wiki article:

You will see your program name listed in the right panel. Click on the checkbox to the left of the listing, and select Mark For Installation.
Click the Apply button in the toolbar at the top of the Synaptic window.
Wait while Synaptic installs your program for you, and when it is finished, you will in most cases, find your new software listed under the appropriate heading in the Launch menu.
If you would like to place an icon on your desktop, just right click on your new program in the menu list, and select Add Item To Desktop. And you're done! Nothing to it! The procedure is identical for installing any other software packages which are available in the repositories. Note: Not all programs create a menu entry and icon automatically. If you cannot find a menu listing for a newly installed package, you will have to create the listing manually, as described in the following Wiki article:
