Mounting or Auto-mounting Hard Drive Partitions

Page history last edited by Ben 15 years ago

Klikit will attempt, by default, to automatically mount all of your available partitions at startup,

however, on some system and hardware configurations, you may find that one or more of your

existing partitions does not get mounted.  This can be a problem for example if you want

Thunderbird to access an existing mail folder on your PCLinuxOS partition, or if you want Picasa

to index your photos which are all stored on your Xandros partition.  Since these partitions are

not mounted, your applications in Klikit will not be able to access them.  Fortunately, Klikit offers

an easy solution.

To get started, open KControl, click System Administration, at the bottom of the left pane,

then click Disk and File Systems,in the left pane.  Click the Administrator button.  If prompted

for a password, enter your regular user password.  In the right pane will be a list of all the detected

partitions.  The partition/s you want to mount should appear in that list.

Right-click on it and select Modify.  A configuration window will open with a number of options for setting

the way the system handles that partition. Near the top is a Mount Point field.  Click the Browse button

next to it.

In the folder selection window, click on the /Media folder to highlight it, and click the New Folder

button at the bottom left.

In the Folder Name field, type an appropriate name for the folder you've just created, and click OK.

Locate your new folder in the folder list, and click to select it.  Click OK.

You'll be returned to the Configuration window.

1.  Make sure the Type selector shows the correct format for your partition.  If it does

not, select the correct type from the drop-down menu.

2.  The Mount Point field should now display your newly

created folder name.

3.  If you want the partition to be mounted automatically at startup, check the box next

to Enable at Startup.

4.  Check the box next to Writable

5.  If the choice is offered, select the User and Group to which files on this

partition belong

6.  In the Mount Permission selector, choose Any user may enable/disable

anytime

Click OK to save your changes.

If you did not check the box to enable at startup, you will need to enable the partition manually.

In the Available Disks and File systems list, click on your partition name to select it, and click the

Enable button at the bottom of the list.  Congratulations!  You're done.  You can now exit KControl.

If you did check the box to enable at startup, reboot your machine now, and your partition should be

mounted automatically at startup.   papabearak
