Klikit-Linux was designed with the Windows refugee in mind, and while it offers the
stability, security, and customizability for which Linux is known, it has retained many
of the simple, intuitive tools Windows users have come to expect, tools which make it
easy for the user to tweak his or her computer in dozens of ways, to achieve precisely the
look they want. The KDesktop Properties Control Panel is a prime example. To
access it, as in Windows, simply right-click on an empty spot on your desktop, and
select Configure Desktop.
The Configure KDesktop window will open to the Change the background settings panel:
- In the Settings for desktop gadget, select the desktop you wish the settings to apply to. You can choose to have the same background on all desktops, or set a different design for each one.
- In the Background box, select Picture. Then click the down arrow gadget to drop down a list of backgrounds available in Klikit-Linux, or click the blue folder icon to browse for other images on your hard drive. If you prefer, you can tick the box next to Slide show, then click the Setup button, and select a group of images which will then cycle accross your desktop at intervals you determine.
- In the Options box, you can set the position, colors and blending characteristics. The settings as depicted in the above screenshot work best for me, at least with a scenic photo background.
- By clicking the Advanced Options button, you can further tweak your desktop to get it just right:
5. As you can see in the screen shot, here you can choose to put a block of contrasting color behind your icon text, to improve visibility in cases where the colors in the background may be similar to the text color, making the text virtually invisible. This setting is especially helpful when you have set up a Slide show, because sooner or later, a background will appear, with non- contrasting colors in the icon area, and your icon text will vanish. Here you can also set the number of lines to use for icon text, and the number of characters per line. Again, the settings depicted in the screen shot work great for me, but your mileage may vary.
6. When you have adjusted the Advanced settings to your liking, click the OK button, to return to the main screen.
7. Once back on the main background settings screen, click the Apply button, to apply your new settings, then click OK to exit.
8. But wait! Let's not be hasty! While you are here, explore, poke around, experiment. The icons in the left pane will each open a new control panel screen enabling you to tweak other aspects of your Klikit-Linux experience, and anything you do in here can be undone. You can't break your system, so try different settings, until you find just the combination that suits you best.
